5 Facts About Buffalo Leather

Posted by Holly Williford on 14th Sep 2022

At Copper River Bag Co. we are dedicated to our leather products. You can see a little bit about the process of how we create the leather in which we are confident enough to say will last 100 years+. The long and the short of it is we love what we do, and we’re very knowledgeable when it comes to everything leather.

Recently we added onto our website a bag that features a buffalo leather accent of the flap: the CLASSIC MESSENGER BAG - BUFFALO LEATHER MADE IN THE U.S.A. Buffalo leather adds a handsome touch to the otherwise nylon bag. We’re excited to begin incorporating this special material into our products, and we hope you get the chance to enjoy the luxury of buffalo leather.

P.S. Here are some buffalo leather products on our website worth checking out.

Many people, at most, have perhaps eaten a buffalo burger, or maybe they’ve eaten buffalo wings (which aren’t made of buffalo)! They do not know that the buffalo is a creature that can provide materials including the buffalo leather featured on our bag. We wanted to introduce this material, and let our customers know a little bit about buffalo leather.

5 Useful Facts About Buffalo Leather

1.Buffalo leather is tanned using something called “brain tanning”. Brain tanning uses other parts of animals, natural and wood smoke. This smoking process keeps the leather fibers strong and pliable.

2.Buffalo hides are a lot smaller than cow hides, because they are not stretched before processing. If you look at the featured buffalo hide leather bag, you’ll see the wonderful pattern and texture of buffalo hide. If we were to stretch buffalo hide we would lose that texture, and buffalo hide wouldn’t have that distinctive textured aesthetic.

3.Buffalo hide is equal in strength to cow hide leather. Neither of these material stretch or deteriorate easily, so they are both an exceptional materials for bags. We love the resilient nature of these materials, and they allow us to promise a lifetime warranty for bags completely comprised of leather.

4.The buffalo and cow leather we use are both full grain. This is taken from the outermost layer of the hide for the toughest materials. It also may show some of the distinctive marks found on hides creating a completely unique style.

5.With any leather material it takes a certain amount of care to create the material clean and strong through its lifetime of use. At Copper River Bag Co. we offer leather cleaning and conditioning kits that can be used for both cow and buffalo leather.

So treat yourself to a bag that offers a distinctive material with the durability and style to back it up. Even if the buffalo leather is not your thing, you’re going to love the rest of our bags made from cow hide.
